Mothers and Parents Circle at Congregation Sha'are Shalom

Congregation Sha'are Shalom is sponsoring a Mothers/Parents Circle group which will begin in late October. This free class will meet 16 times during the year. The Mothers/Parents Circle program offers free educational events and resources for parents raising Jewish children within the context of intermarriage or a committed relationship. The program focuses on Jewish rituals, ethics and the creation of a Jewish home and includes regular meetings and group Shabbat and holiday observances. Meetings will be held in Ashburn, Virginia-area on Tuesday evenings starting in late October. Other locations are available in Northern Virginia and can be found at www.shalomdc.org/page.aspx?id=182507. You do not need to be a member of the participating organization to attend.

For more information, please contact Sheri at 703.737.0686 or rujec@sha-areshalom.org .

Congregation Sha'are Shalom, the Conservative synagogue in Loudoun County, Virginia, is an egalitarian community, authentically Jewish and fully engaged in the world. Affiliated with the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, Sha'are Shalom welcomes new members and serves families and individuals through religious services, Jewish education for all ages, programs for interfaith families, and social events. Founded in 1996, CSS is led by Rabbi Michael Ragozin and now counts more than 130 households in its membership. The congregation holds Kabbalat Shabbat services welcoming the sabbath every Friday evening at 7.30 PM and Shabbat morning services every Saturday at 9.30 AM.

Young Jewish Serviceman at Walter Reed

There is a wonderful young Jewish soldier at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. His name is Chris Levy and he is a corporal in a Ranger unit that served in Iraq. Chris is a distant cousin of mine (through marriage). Chris was in a Humvee that was hit by a massive roadside bomb. Chris sustained massive injuries that cost him both legs and severely damaged his right arm. I visited him last week and found him to be in terrific spirits. He has undergone a number of major surgeries and there are several more planned to reconstruct his right arm. Chris has been at Walter Reed for a year and faces another year before he leaves.

His dad, Eric Levy, comes down from Long Island and stays with Chris for a couple of weeks. Then his mom, Debbie, spends a couple more. They alternate. Chris and Eric observed Yom Kippur at the hospital. I was amazed at Chris’s courage and attitude. He hates people doing things for him that he can try himself. When I took Chris and his dad for dinner he literally pounced from his wheelchair into the front seat for my car and from my car to his wheelchair when we arrived at the restaurant. He smiles and can’t wait to get back on to his prosthetic legs as soon as his most recent surgery heals.

The Jewish community in Washington D.C. should take notice of Chris and give him it’s full support. Chris is billeted at the Malogne House at Walter Reed in room 259. For further information contact Gene Silverman at 703-869-6014.

Thanks
