Internationally Recognized Economist Prof. Leszek Balcerowicz,

Architect of Poland’s Economic Reform After the Fall of Communism

Speaks on the Impact of Current Global Financial Crisis

Where:      Consulate General of Poland in New York

233 Madison Avenue at 37th Street

Date:          Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

Time:          7pm

fotoIn the midst of the biggest economic turmoil raging across virtually all the world’s financial markets, Consulate General of Poland in New York offers a unique opportunity to hear Professor Leszek Balcerowicz’s insightful analysis of the impact of the current crisis on the emerging economies. Prof. Balcerowicz is to share his opinions with some of America’s most influential economic scholars, business people and diplomats.

Professor Balcerowicz, currently with the Warsaw School of Economics (WSE), former Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance and former President of the National Bank of Poland (NBP) was the architect of Poland's economic reforms initiated in 1989 at the time of the collapse of communism.

In the last 20 years, he has been at the center of Poland's economic and political life. His enormous success of transforming the derelict, centrally-planned country’s economy of the late 1980’s into a fully-fledged, modern, free-market financial system it is today has brought him worldwide acclaim and recognition. Prof. Balcerowicz holds more than a dozen of honorary doctorates from universities in three continents, including the University of Aix-en-Provence, France, the University of Sussex, UK, De Paul University of Chicago, USA, Staffordshire University, UK, Dundee University in Scotland, Viadrina European University in Frankfurt (Oder), Germany, University of the Pacific in Lima, Peru, and the Gerhard Mercator University in Duisburg, Germany.

In 1992 he was awarded the Ludwig Erhard Prize from the Ludwig Erhard Foundation, Germany. In 1998 Mr. Balcerowicz received "Finance Minister of the Year" title from the British financial monthly "Euromoney". In 1999 European Institute of Washington granted him "Transatlantic Leadership Award" for the most outstanding European personality in 1998, and he received the Central European Award for the Finance Minister of the Year 1998 in Central and Eastern Europe.

In 2001 he was awarded the Friedrich von Hayek Prize, Germany; in the same year he received the Carl Bertelsmann Prize for his achievements during the process of transformation of the Polish economy. In 2002 the Fasel Foundation honored him with a prize for his merits for the social market economy. In January 2004 British monthly "The Banker" recognized Mr. Balcerowicz as central banker of the year for Europe. In October 2004 he was granted the annual "Emerging Markets Award" for the best president of a central bank in Central and Eastern Europe. In 2006, he was voted by FT.com readers one of five winners in the Pioneering Thought Leadership Project.
