25 Years of the Rosenblatt Prize
for Excellence During 2008, the University of Utah will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Rosenblatt Prize for Excellence, a no-strings attached award of $40,000 granted each year to an outstanding member of the University faculty. The red carpet will roll out for distinguished guests of the University, the Rosenblatt family, and award recipients from all over the country. The Rosenblatt Prize for Excellence was established the in honor of Nathan and Tillie Rosenblatt on the centenary of their immigration to Utah, in recognition of their legacy of civic leadership and generosity. In 1983, the award was increased by son and philanthropist Joseph and his wife Evelyn Rosenblatt, which ensure recipients the endowment gifts of $40,000. The endowment stipulates that the President of the University of Utah appoints a selection committee from the faculty and administration, whose members are familiar with the work and dedication necessary to achieve excellence in any given field of learning, evidencing creative study and achievement deemed worthy of furthering the goals and philosophy of a great university. Recipients usually exceed all qualifications by dedicating their lives to the betterment of society and education. Through the 25 years, award winners have been doctors, philosophers, anthropologists, scientists and writers. The 2007 winner, Huntsman Cancer Institute executive director Mary Beckerle, is a noted biologist, nationally recognized researcher, experienced administrator and teacher. One of the most well-known Rosenblatt Prize recipient is 1998 winner Mario Capecchi, a professor of Human Genetics and Biology who received the 2007 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his pioneering development of a gene-targeting technique that has revolutionized the study of mammalian biology. It has become a trend for Rosenblatt Prize recipients to continue their work and achieve great things for the University of Utah and in their academic fields. The Rosenblatt family has a history of strong commitment and support for Salt Lake City community. Nathan and Tillie Rosenblatt never had the opportunities for a formal education, but pursued learning, religion and culture. Their sons, Simon, Morris and Joseph grew to become successful businessmen. Joseph founded Eimco which grew to become a significant, global machinery company and was a well know philanthropist, supporter of the arts and civic leader.
