Dr. Raphael Rom is a sabra from Tel Aviv who served in the tank corps and began his studies in Technion’s Electrical Engineering department. After earning two degrees from the Technion, he came to the U.S. and received a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Utah. He then performed his post-doctorate work at the Stanford Research Institute.

His expertise is in computer networking and distributed systems, working with the early teams that researched computer networks and brought about the Internet, and was part of the team that created the first mobile wireless computer network. Says Prof. Rom, “Innovation and the urge to discover keep me busy and happy at the Technion.”

Noga Livnat is a biomedical engineer who started her undergraduate studies at M.I.T. and transferred to the Technion after a successful freshmen year. She is a graduate student in the new program of master's studies in nanosciences and nanotechnology, a highly interdisciplinary field of science. Noga has a full scholarship that allows her to be a full-time student and researcher. In her spare time she is also a classical choir singer and a salsa dance instructor.

Amir Nahir served in the IDF for five years as an officer in the field artillery corps. He was second in command of a rocket launcher battery, and later become a team leader for an advanced fire-finding radar. He still takes an active part as a reserve officer as the division’s chief instructor. Amir earned a bachelor's degree in computer science at the Technion and is now in the last stages of his thesis research towards a master's degree in computer science. He’s received numerous awards including one for outstanding teaching assistants. He works part-time in IBM’s Haifa Research Labs. He enjoys reading, mostly history books and biographies, and occasionally thrillers. He also scuba dives.

Woman with two special needs children needs help

All:

I just spoke to a woman who is new in town, and has a 9 year old son with Cerebral Palsy, and a 12 year old daughter with anxiety/depression.  She moved here for a job that did not work out (even before she started) and is currently unemployed.  She currently lives in Northern Virginia.  Her children are on Medicaid and she is unable to find a doctor to treat them both (she found a clinic that would treat the son, but not the daughter).  The clinic at that will treat her son cannot provide speech and OT for him as those departments are full.  The waiting list is full, as well.  She may have to drive him several miles to get him the therapy that he needs.  She grew up in this area and was confirmed at a local synagogue.

She is running out of money and food.  She was offered a job with a dog walking company but the offer was withdrawn because she does not have a computer (this company only contacts its employees by computer).  She needs a computer not only for herself but also for her son, so that he can practice keyboarding in order for him to be able to do his school work (he is unable to write due to physical limitations from the CP).

Her immediate needs are the following:

  1. Employment –
    1. She is willing to baby sit, be a nanny, clean house, dog walk, or anything else that will pay a living wage.  She is experienced in taking care of special needs children and the elderly
    2. Has degrees in early childhood education from Towson St. and radio/television/film from University of MD College Park
  2. Healthy Food – they use the food banks but the ones in McLean don’t give diary, meat or produce
  3. A computer – reasons are stated above
  4. A doctor for her daughter that will accept Medicaid
  5. Reliable transportation – since she may have to drive quite a distance for her son to get his therapy, she needs something that is reliable.
  6. Money – for obvious reasons.

Please contact me if you are able to help with any of this.  Thank you.
