A NEW IDEA FOR THE NEW YEAR

For many Jews across our wonderful commonwealth and beyond, the next few weeks has a pressure all its own. No, not back-to-school blues, rather, back-to-Shul blues; that's right which synagogue will it be for the High Holidays. For many however, services have simply lost their appeal and the only shofar they may see this Rosh Hashanah, will be one driving a limousine.

Chabad of Northern Virginia is on a mission to correct all that. This year, aside from their regular annual services, they are providing a new kind of service, dubbed the High Holiday Introductory Service. It promises to be more then just another service. It will be an experience, one not to be missed, with running commentary throughout, prayers in English, all at no cost whatsoever. "There is a real need for this type of thing" says Rabbi Fajnland," People want to feel at home in a synagogue. That’s hard to do, when one is not sure what to do, when to it, and why we do it anyway."

STAGEWORKS WILL PRESENT "THE CHOSEN" Oct 2 through Oct 19, 2008

Chaim Potok and Aaron Posner worked closely together to adapt Potok's 1967 novel, "THE CHOSEN", into this tightly-knit and moving drama about two dissimilar Jewish boys whose unlikely friendship creates tension among their families and their worlds.  A standing-room-only hit wherever it has played, this award-winning adaptation from the award-winning novel is set in Brooklyn during World War II.  The story centers around young Reuven Malter, the son of an affectionate, liberal, Orthodox Zionist father, and his friend, Danny Saunders, whose Hasidic family presents starkly contrasting standards about thought and behavior.  As the boys grow in years, they come to grips with learning about fathers and sons, friendship, and religious faith.    The play is more about relationships than about politics; more about reconciliation than about religion, and it presents its issues with universal appeal -- speaking to the humans concerns that affect everyone.  "THE CHOSEN" is appropriately topical during an era when our world is desperately in need of compromise and mutual respect among divergent cultures.
